Reading the Spark Plugs
*EASY*
For the most accurate determination of the condition of your engine, "read" the spark plugs. Inspecting and reading the spark plugs is more informative than reading the exhaust tailpipe because you can see the condition of each spark plug relative to its position in the engine. This helps pinpoint the scope and location of the problem to a certain portion of the engine. For example, if only one or two plugs are oil fouled, you know the problem is limited to those combustion cylinders. This information can be passed on to a professional automotive technician if necessary.
